Jacques LaVelle was a bear of a man with a pathological hatred of the English. The LaVelles had fled the Huguenot Persecution of 1683 before settling in the American Colonies, where they would raise the bar for mercantile and political corruption, as their nascent industrial-financial behemoth raced across an emerging nation-state taking its first, faltering steps on the world stage.
